Update spectral-element WACCM regression test

What is the feature/what would you like to discuss?

SMS_Ln9.ne30pg3_ne30pg3_mg17.FW2000climo.derecho_intel.cam-outfrq9s_rrtmgp test uses 70 layer WACCM (so CESM2 setting). Should be updated to CESM3. Perhaps we can start by replacing this test with Mijeong's 2 degree setup: ne16pg3

I am changing hyperviscoity settings and we are fixing the sponge layer (in physics) bug which both are needed for WACCM spectral-elements. Before we proceed though: Has the vertical resolution for WACCM been set in stone yet?

Hi Peter,

the current plan is to stick with L135 for now and prioritize 1deg development. Next year we will do extensive tests and comparisons with the MT and then we'll make a more informed decisions on a potential tuned up 2deg version and what vertical grid to release. So for this test I'd recommend L135. Could you do this test also with 1 deg?

As an aside for everyone. When @brian-eaton overhauled the regression tests earlier this year, he concentrated on the CAM tests and left the WACCM and chemistry tests alone. There may be obsolete tests which should be either removed or upgraded to CAM7.

we decided to remove

SMS_Ln9.ne30pg3_ne30pg3_mg17.FW2000climo.derecho_intel.cam-outfrq9s_rrtmgp

but we need a test using RRTMGP, CAM6 and SE or MPAS dycore (this is for CAM-SIMA). Separate issue opened #1450 for that.
